Northern Light: Realism and Symbolism in Scandinavian Painting 1880-1910
Cooperative exhibition between The Corocan Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., The Brooklyn Museum and The Minneapolis Institute of Art in 1982 and 83 seeking to underline the relation between the different movements in Nordic Art in the time around the previous turn of the century. Examining how the seemingly different styles of realism and symbolism both have had a large impact on the art of the century to come, while also pointing to some broader similarities between the two, both in their origin in the same Nordic artistic milieus in Paris in the 1880s and 90s and through the common treatment of a unique Nordic light.
In total the exhibition contained 96 works by 36 different artists with Harriet Backer being represented with Blue Interior from 1883. Among other artists exhibited major names such as Edvard Munch, Halfdan Egedius, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Vilhelm Hammershøi and Helene Scherfbeck were included.
